COCHLEAR implants, viruses and genetic variations were just some of the topics students tackled in the HSC biology exam yesterday.

More than 15,000 students around the state did the exam, or about one in four HSC students.

At Lake Macquarie High School, Booragul, three hours was more than enough time for Lisa Bell, Alice Watkins and Sophie Thornton to complete the paper.

Each said they had about an hour to spare but that the paper was testing.

Lisa said the paper included sections on human senses, animal species, the search for better health, germs, viruses and diseases.

"It was pretty hard; I should have prepared myself a little better," she said.

Alice said she was glad she had studied.

"My memory of class over the past year would not have been enough information to have helped me," she said.

"The bit I studied on cross-genetic species, there was a lot of that in the exam, so I'm glad that I studied."

Sophie said she was able to answer all the questions in depth.

"I think I went OK," she said.

"Studying helped a lot."
