THE Wollemi Pine, cell division, genetic diseases and water conservation were just some of the topics put under the microscope in yesterday's HSC biology exam.

Despite the diversity of topics, students at Warners Bay High School emerged from the three-hour exam confident of good marks.

"I think I will get in the 80s," Alannah Krix said.

Leon Sokulsky, who hopes to study medicine or science next year, said students had been wary of the exam following a difficult trial paper.

"It [the HSC] was much better than the trials. The questions were much more focused on the topic areas," Leon said.

Students said science head teacher James Ostermann had been very helpful during revision for the exam.

Biology is the school's most popular science subject, with 57 students sitting yesterday's HSC exam.

"I think one of the reasons it's popular is because it relates directly to everyday life, unlike physics and chemistry, which are more specific," student Danica Browne said.
